GANDRUNG SEWU DANCE BANYUWANGI
The Gandrung Sewu dance is a vibrant and grand cultural performance originating from Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. It involves hundreds of dancers, often numbering a thousand, performing on the shores of Boom Beach. “Gandrung” means “enchanted” or “in love,” reflecting the spirit of the dance, which traditionally expresses gratitude for abundant harvests and honors the goddess of rice and fertility, Dewi Sri. The dancers, predominantly young women dressed in colorful, ornate costumes, move gracefully to a blend of traditional music, with bamboo flutes, gongs, and drums creating a lively, rhythmic backdrop.
Gandrung Sewu Dance Banyuwangi is not just a performance but a celebration of local history, culture, and unity. Each year, it draws in large audiences from all over the world, who come to witness the synchronized beauty of the dancers as they fill the beach with waves of movement. The choreography and storytelling in Gandrung Sewu often depict local legends, historical events, and scenes of everyday life, symbolizing Banyuwangi’s rich heritage.
